Follow up Kendo and mental health questionnaire from Kyoto University
Some of you will remember Fujiwara sensei who visited us and you may even have completed the first round of the questionnaire he set up as part of a world-wide study into Budo (and specifically Kendo) and its positive effect on well-being. For those who did the first one, he is asking for your participation in the follow up.
Essentially the first study showed there was a strong correlation between Kendo/Budo practice and resilience. This study is trying to answer the question of causality. Fujiwara sensei's introduction below.

Dear VKR/AKR members,
2019 marks the Melbourne University Kendo Club's 30th year anniversary. Since starting out in 1989, our club has come a long way since thanks to the incredible contributions of all sensei and members - both within the club and from the wider Kendo community. It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us in celebrating this accomplishment, and the hard work of many who have helped us grow over the years.
We will be holding our annual Muken Taikai on 25th May 2019, followed by a dinner in the evening. For those who have participated in previous years, we have decided to change the format and divisions this year to mark our anniversary event. Please note that the organisers may have to make some changes post-registration depending on numbers.
Individual Events
Junior Kyu Division (UG - 4K; beginners from 2018 will compete in this bracket instead of having a separate division)
Senior Kyu Division (3K - 1K)
Junior Dan Division (1D - 2D)
Senior Dan Division (3D - 5D; 5th Dan will be able to compete in this division this year)
*Champion and runner-up of each division will move on to the next division like in previous years
Team Event
There will be a team division this year amongst different clubs, including the appearance of the ol' UMKC team! Teams will be sorted after registration, depending on club entries. Please register for individual events first.
A final schedule will be sent out closer to the date, but do expect shinai check-in to start around 10:30am, and run till 5:30pm. There will be a $15 entry fee for each competitor.
The anniversary dinner will be held after the taikai. The following are the details of the dinner;
La Spaghetteria Ristorante
132 Lygon St, Carlton
$40pp which includes pizzas, pasta, dessert & drinks
We would also appreciate if any non-competing members can kindly volunteer their time for shimpan (3D and above) or volunteer duties. Please let your club secretaries know if you would like to compete, volunteer and/or join the dinner.
We look forward to having you at this event!
Regards,
Cheryl Low
Vice-President

Dear All
Thank you very much for your kind cooperation regarding the questionnaire about physical exercise, Budo, life habits and mental well-being.
If you cannot log in using your ID and password at baseline (Time 1), or you fogot them, it would be the best/ most straightforward to log in creating both new ID and password.
Ideally, it is helpful for us to use the same e-mail address you used at baseline for identification of the subjects.
As well, the new ID would be the same username at baseline plus "_2", that is, if your ID at base line is "apple", "apple_2" is the best as Time 2 ID.
I would like to ask you to participate to the online questionnaire [regarding the relationship between life habits (physical exercise, Budo including Kendo etc,.) and mental well-being] once again as a follow-up (time 2) survey. Your kind cooperation once again should lead to getting the precious data in terms of investigating longitudinal changes of psychological/ mental status influenced by your life habits.I hope that, by the publication and presentation of the results of this research in scientific journals and medical and sports-science communities, we are able to discover the optimal qualitative and quantitative physical workout habits that contribute to the promotion of mental health.I would be very happy if you would kindly participate in it by answering an online questionnaire below. First, you can login by created ID and password; While taking the questionnaire, if you do not wish to complete it in it's entirety at one time, the progress will be saved when closed and can be completed at your convenience. The questionnaire will require about 40 minutes to complete.English version for follow-up survey (for people who kindly participate it for the 2nd time):Facebook page:Thank you in advance for your cooperation.Best wishes,Hironobu Fujiwara M.D., Ph.D.LecturerKyoto University HospitalDepartment of NeuropsychiatryRIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence ProjectArtificial Intelligence Ethics and Society TeamVisiting Researcher54 Shogoinkawaracho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto6068507, JPN.
